"Day 1 Holt Fireball UK National, Open and European Championships
Saturday 6th August, and a truly international fleet gathered on the Green in Teignmouth in preparation for the up and coming Championships. A special mention should go Pam Johnston and here team of event measurers who managed to get ninety nine Fireballs through full international measurement within the day. This procedure involved weighing hulls, foils and mast as well us hull rocker and spar bands.

Sunday 7th August, as part of the event briefing there was a presentation by the Met Office the synopsis for the first half of the week was light North or North-easterly winds with the prospect of sea breezes.

With a 3pm start scheduled on the first days racing there had been plenty of time for the sea breeze to settle down and it was with a steady F2 to F3 breeze that the fleet of one hundred and twenty two boats put to sea. The Fireball fleet has never been one with a reputation of being line shy. It was therefore no surprise that Mike was to get his black flag out after only the first recall. The second start was also a general recall so under the back flag rule Mike sent some eighteen boats home. Just to prove that he would show no favour, no matter who you are, this even included UKFA class Chairman Keryn Henwood-Fox.

The fleet eventually managed to get away at the third attempt. It was 2000 World Champion DJ Edwards and his crew Dan Newman who made the best start, was able to tack across to the right and lead at the windward mark and maintained his lead to the finish. Second spot was closely contested between Richard Estaugh and crew Rob Gardner and Chips Howarth and Vyv Townend. It was Richard and Rob who were to pull ahead and take second spot.

The perusing group of three boat consisted of 2004 European Champion Tomas Musil & Jan Stantejsky form the Czech Republic, 2004 World Champion Andy Smith and Jonny Mildred and Dave Wade and Crew Richard Wagstaff. Tomas & Jan just pipped Andy and Jonny on the line. However on getting home Andy and Jonny discovered that they were also victims of Mike “Black Flag” Pearson.

In the evening the Commodore’s Reception was help at Bitton House, with free wine and buffet.

"The early morning westerly breeze was soon over come as sea breeze clouds started to build. By 1 pm a north-easterly breeze had filled in allowing race officer Mike Pearson to set a course. Once again he had his black flag on show. At the first attempt at starting a number of competitors managed to pick up there second black flag of the week and it is only race two!

When the fleet did get away it was race one winners DJ Edwards and Dan Newman who lead at the windward mark followed by the Fireball International Commodore Penny & Ian Gibbs. However the Jury boat decided that Penny & Ian were being over eager down wind leading them to have to do a 720 penalty turn allowing Andy Smith and Jonny Mildred into second. There were many place changes taking place on the first triangle with Dave Wade & Richard Wagstaff, Graham Newton & Mark Stephens and Andy Pearce & Adam Broughton constantly swapping third place. Down the final reach Graham and Mark managed to power past Andy and Adam to take third gun.

The race officer was quick to turn the fleet around for race three, however the fleet were also too quick with Mike Pearson once again having to send a number of competitors home with his black flag.

With the sea breeze still building race three eventually got away in a good force three to four breeze with many teams electing to rake back onto medium settings. At the windward mark it was the 2004 European Champions Tomas Musil & Jan Stantejsky from Czech who lead from Vince Horey and Gavin Tilson. Down the first reach Vince and Gavin managed to overhaul Tomas and Jan to take a lead which they would hold to the finish. By the end of the race Chips Howarth & Vyv Townend had pulled up to second spot with Dave Wade and Richard Wagstaff in third, relegating Tomas and Jan to fourth spot.

After three races, with many top sailors picking up at least one black flag, Dave Wade and Richard Wagstaff headed the leader board from DJ Edwards and Dan Newman in second and Richard Estaugh and Rob Gardner in third.

Tonight it is “Buddy” night where boats from each half of the fleet are paired up. Each boat is given a ticket and only when you find your buddy can you take you tickets to the bar and present then for a free drink from the bar."

"The morning started much as the previous day with a light westerly breeze & lots of sunshine. The anticipation was that the sea breeze would fill in by 12 o’clock. However 12 o’clock came and went and there was no sign of a sea breeze. Postponement flags were hosted and the fleet stayed ashore. It was not until nearly 3 pm that the breeze filled in and settled down.

Race officer Mike Pearson must have been in a generous mood as he did not get his black flag out straight away! However the fleet did not respond well to Mike’s generosity and Mike had to get his black flag out once more as he recalled the fleet once again.

Under the black flag the fleet got away to a clean start. Simon Maskell & Jon Watkins sailed the perfect beat to lead at the windward mark, closely followed by the Swiss team of Kurt Venhoda & Sonja Zaugg. They soon built up a generous lead which they would hold to the end of the race.

Over all the leader board was once again shuffled as more and more competitors picked up a big score. DJ Edwards & Dan Newman put in another top performance taking third place in race four and putting them back on top of the overall leader board, from Richard Estough and Rob Gardner in second place.

Taking up on tradition started last year at the European championships in Slovenia, a new approach to making sure competitors tally off and on correctly is being trilled this week. Competitors must collect there tally before launching and on returning them to the beach master after sailing they receive FREE BEER. Surprisingly there has not been a single tally failure so far.

Tonight the fleet are being treated to a traditional British cuisine; it is curry night with extra hot Fireball chilly source. It looks like it may be a late night for many as tomorrow is a layday."

bonjour martin,

tally on and off semble être proche de sign in and out, autrement dit emargement de départ et de retour.

Aujourd hui DAY OFF a Teignmouth, apres 3 manches de petit temps.
On y pense !
